The great author Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, whom was the daughter of both Mary Westcott Perkins and Frederick Beecher Perkins. Gilman had a hard life; her father left the family after his child died in 1866. Mary Perkins, Gilman's mother lived alone with her children on the edge of poverty.
