Costa Rica is an exotic country located in Middle America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. It is between Nicaragua and Panama. It is 51,100 square km in size, and it's capital is San Jose. When compared to the United States, it is slightly smaller than West Virginia. It has a coastline that is 1,290 km in length. Costa Rica separated from Veragua and it was officially named Costa Rica. The Colonial period now started. In 1573, Spanish crown fixed permanent boundaries for Costa Rica. Then, in 1502, Christopher Columbus sailed around Costa Rica's Caribbean shore. After that, the Spanish came to Costa Rica. Costa Rica remained a Spanish colony until 1821. In 1821, Mexico declared Independence. Costa Ricans were unsure to remain loyal to crown or declare independence. Later, in 1848, Independence was issued for Costa Rica.
