In 1988 Dell Computer Corporation made an initial public offering of common stock. By late 1989 the company had 1,600 employees worldwide, had introduced its first 316LT laptop computer. Dell Computer Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, was appointed to the board of directors of the Foundation for the National Technology Medal, and was named Man of the Year by PC Magazine. In 1992 the company was named to the Fortune 500 list of the country's largest manufacturers.
