Historical Summary The history of Mexico began when Indians of unknown tribes migrated from the north into what is now Mexico. They arrived before 8000 B.C. These people were hunters who followed herds of buffalo, mammoths, mastodons, and other large animals. Their way of life explains why they lived in small, temporary communities. The main problem with the economy in Mexico is its national debt. As of 2000 the Mexican debt was 162 billion dollars. It is receiving 1.166 billion dollars in aid. Another continual problem with the Mexican economy is the poverty level. In 1998, 27% of the population of Mexico was in poverty. Income distribution is very unequal, in the sense that the top 20% of income earners account for 55% of the economy.
