This paper will provide a comparison of the programming capabilities, application software between UNIX and Microsoft Windows 2000 and the differences between the availability of application software on both.
Differences
Windows 2000 come with only the operating systems. If you want office productivity tools you will need to purchase an additional product (Windows) or if you want to create programs you need to purchase an additional product (like Visual Basic).

Conclusion
UNIX software is thought to be less user friendly with command line interface as opposed to Microsoft's' windows. The advent of JAVA programming not only did the application become more user friendly that also became platform independent. In the server environment UNIX application surpass Windows applications in both market share and performance.
