When I first started reading it I had no idea where it was going or what it was even about, but then after I got used to the style of writing I began to see a reoccurring pattern of two major themes. I was able to see the character of Milkman grow and surprisingly at the end, the novel all came together for me. Song of Solomon shows the growth of Milkman as he finds his past by tracing names and stories all the way back to Africa. The characters show love in a strange way; by causing death all around them but Milkman rises above this and is able to find his freedom and his flight.
