The Declaration of Independence was not successful to live up to it's ideals over the 220 years that it's been around. This document established the United States of America as an independent and free state, separated from British rule. This document failed because it did not fully protect the US citizen's rights to equality, life, and the pursuit of happiness.
This authoritative document failed to fully establish and invoke its ideas to keep every man equal.

The Declaration of Independence does not sufficiently uphold US citizen's rights. The Declaration does not successfully maintain equality among its subjects. It doesn't secure the quality of life or protect a person from unwanted harm. Lastly, the Declaration fails to efficiently provide its reliant citizens with the happiness they wish to pursue. Even though its an important official document, the Declarations meaning has been lost and bent over the years.
