novel, John Steinbeck uses literary tools, such as; similes, metaphors, imagery, and allusions. Each of these devices is used to emphasize one central theme that even in the hardest times, one should always think of the needs of others. The Joads definitely demonstrate this. They demonstrate the golden rule, due unto others as you would have them due unto you. In the hardest times of their journey, they always took time out to help others.
