It is a commonly held, and largely mistaken, belief that the United States of America was founded on religious tolerance and freedom. Far from the truth this is, however...nearly the opposite, in fact. The founders of this country, the Puritans, were strict and vengeful in their religious practices...so zealous and firm about prayer-this and holy-that that they actually left their native country so that they could live out their strict, vengeful lives alone.

looks at the previous threats that America has had placed upon it. The 'better to be safe than sorry' method may have ruffled some feathers, but it may also have averted some terrible things. Overreaction is often better than no reaction at all - there are scores of catastrophes that have been averted because of overzealous citizens or organizations, though surely just as much unneeded grief and anguish has been caused because of the same.
