I think that the last paragraphs of the book show that Mersault did indeed find some sort of meaning at the end of his life. Maybe not a normal persons definition of meaning, but that of an existentialist. So, in conclusion I believe that Mersault embarked on an existential journey and that he was able to find meaning at the end of his life.
