Since 1972 when Title IX was enacted by Congress, the progress made by women--both on the playing field and in the office--has been immeasurable. Without this law, women might still be limited to cheerleading for the boys' football teams and watching basketball from the bleachers. Instead, thanks to the more forward-thinking men and women of the 60's and early 70's, we shoot hoops and run laps as well as the boys on our own well-equipped teams.

schools are now very supportive of their girls' athletic program and realize the important impact this has. Girls who receive a message that they are just as good as boys grow up to be doctors, lawyers, and professional basketball players who in turn pass the message on to the next generation. Perhaps after another 32 years, in 2036, when most of today's high school-aged students have their own children, equality between the genders will truly be equal.
