in the modern world because the majority of people can not live this way. It is human nature to have desires for money and fame. Plato is making the assumption that there exists a population who do not care about material things. There are people today who do not care for that and work together to achieve a common goal. Such populations are Buddhists, monks, nuns and priest, and people who live on a Kibbutz.
